On October 25, at the invitation of the DEP Karl Schweizer, the professor of the department of psychology and director of the assessment methods center of the university of Frankfurt, Germany, visited the DEP to join the sixth Interdisciplinary Salon of Educational Psychology, bringing a wonderful report entitled "Cognitive Bases of Intelligence: The Fixed-Links Modeling Perspective". The salon was hosted by Jing Zhang, the associate researcher of the DEP.

First of all, Professor Schweizer drew on the theoretical framework proposed by Eysenck to construct the connection between physiological intelligence, psychological intelligence and social intelligence, and pointed out the importance of exploring the cognitive mechanism of intelligence in understanding the structure and connotation of intelligence.

Next, professor Schweizer introduced the research methods most commonly used in exploring the cognitive mechanism of intelligence, especially the structural equation model; At the same time, the connotation and representation methods of explicit variables and latent variables in structural equation models are briefly reviewed, which provides a series of background knowledge for students and researchers who are new to this field. Further, professor Schweizer detailed his recently proposed fixed-links Model.

Finally, professor Schweizer combined with the empirical research carried out in recent years, explained the research design and specific operation methods of using the preset path model to represent the cognitive processes such as coding, refreshing and transformation in working memory. This series of studies reveals the role of working memory, attention, and processing speed in fluid intelligence, deepening the understanding of the cognitive basis of intelligence.

During the Q&A session, the paticipants had in-depth communication with professor Schweizer on key issues such as model construction, measurement error and model comparison.
